What is a Forex Spread?

The bid-ask spread explained

When you trade forex, you are always given two prices: the bid price (the price at which you sell) and the ask price (the price at which you buy). The difference between these two prices is called the spread.

The spread is the primary cost of trading and is measured in pips — the smallest unit of price movement for a currency pair. For most major pairs, one pip equals 0.0001 of the quoted price.

Formula

Spread = Ask Price − Bid Price

For example, if EUR/USD is quoted at 1.08542 / 1.08543, the spread is 0.00001, or 0.1 pips — one of the tightest spreads available in the market.

EUR / USD
BID (Sell) 1.08542
SPREAD
0.1 pip
ASK (Buy) 1.08543

How to calculate your trade cost

The cost of a trade (excluding swaps and commissions) is calculated using this simple formula:

Formula

Trade Cost = Spread × Trade Size × Pip Value

Example Calculation

Instrument EUR/USD
Spread 0.14 pips (Raw ECN)
Trade Size 1 standard lot (100,000)
Pip Value $10.00
Trade Cost $0.14

What affects forex spreads?

Market Liquidity

Spreads are tightest during peak trading hours when the London and New York sessions overlap (1pm–5pm GMT). Higher liquidity means tighter spreads.

Market Volatility

During major economic news releases (NFP, CPI, central bank decisions), spreads can widen significantly as liquidity providers adjust their quotes.

Currency Pair

Major pairs like EUR/USD and GBP/USD have the tightest spreads due to high trading volume. Exotic pairs carry wider spreads due to lower liquidity.

Liquidity Providers

Zevivo sources prices from multiple Top-tier Liquidity Providerss and liquidity providers, ensuring you always receive the most competitive bid/ask quotes available.

Spreads FAQ

A pip (Percentage in Point) is the smallest standard unit of price movement in the forex market. For most currency pairs, one pip equals 0.0001 (or 1/100th of 1%). For pairs involving the Japanese Yen (JPY), one pip equals 0.01. The spread between the bid and ask price is measured in pips, making it the universal language of forex trading costs.

Fixed spreads remain constant regardless of market conditions — they do not change during news events or periods of low liquidity. Variable (floating) spreads fluctuate with market conditions. Zevivo offers variable spreads that are typically very tight during normal market hours, providing better value for most traders. Variable spreads can widen during major economic announcements.

Forex spreads are typically tightest during peak market hours when multiple major trading sessions overlap. The London–New York overlap (approximately 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM GMT) is the most liquid period of the trading day, resulting in the tightest spreads on major currency pairs. Spreads tend to widen during the Asian session and around major news releases.

It depends on your account type. The Standard Account has no commission — all trading costs are included in the spread (from 1.0 pip). The Super Zevivo Account (Raw ECN) offers raw interbank spreads from 0.0 pips but charges a low commission of $3.50 per side per standard lot. For high-volume traders, the Super Zevivo Account typically results in lower overall trading costs.
